Breaking Typology: Cinema and Play
Cinemaxx Junior
Indonesia

Intuitively integrating the element of play with the movie experience, Cinemaxx Junior offers a novel cinema concept for young families. Against the conventional expectations of imposed silence, the cinema’s design aims to accommodate the natural inclinations of mobile children while alleviating the stress on parents. The result is a convergence of physical play and visual entertainment in a functional, cohesively-designed setting.

From the commencement of the project, the design sought to holistically implement a truly family-dedicated cinema; reimagining it with a multi-dimensional playground system that allows children to engage in their innate sense of mobility, exploring and socialising in an informal participative space. This redefining of the movie-watching experience, which moves away from silence and discipline, helps alleviate the stress on parents and guardians, increasing their enjoyment of the space.

Beyond the focus on children’s enthrallment, functionality is a key force behind the design. Addressing safety considerations, the coherently planned layout incorporates generous passageways and zoning for different age groups, enabling easier supervision of mobile children. Complementing this are thoughtful design considerations catered to the visibility and auditory sensitivity of children.

First of its kind in Asia, Cinemaxx Junior breaks new ground in typology and embodies the possibilities in design—a design for humanity, driven by the desire for higher quality of social interaction and user experience.
