Blumiwave was an outdoor installation featured at the 2023 Singapore i Light Marina Bay Festival which was thematically centred on ‘The New Wave’ and explored innovation in sustainability with a spotlight on nature’s blue spaces—namely, her oceans and rives.
Our design research led us to Blue Energy, a renewable energy harnessed from ocean and/or river waves. To raise awareness of this, we abstracted the form of the wave using scaffold netting. Carefully strung together, we transformed the material from unsightly to artful, dynamic wave forms across varied directions and heights. Viewed from a distance, it evokes the energy of crashing waves; experienced within. Its tactile materiality and layered scales engage visitors and offer a multi-dimensional experience and self-expressive encounter.
The material choice—beyond its tactility—was also selected in alignment with the festival’s objective of raising awareness on sustainability. As interior designers, we wanted to work with a material that is not only intrinsic to the Built Environment industry but also has the potential to be re-used after the tear-down of the installation; thereby, highlighting the industry’s push for more sustainable outcomes in the face of this global challenge.
